Reid was always the one who internally (and sometimes externally) mocking the family guys at work. The ones who brought in pictures to hang in their locker, talked about family trips and inane child stories. The ones who left on time without fail, desperate to beat the (lack of) Oakdale traffic to get home in time for dinner or bedtime or recitals. He just couldn’t see why anyone who’d spent the better part of a decade and who knows how much money on an education would chose to waste it on a little extra time at home.

Then again, he’d never had a real home before.

He guessed it started when they moved in together, of course, but he just assumed it was the readily available chance at getting laid each night that served as incentive. Since Riley came into the house, however, everything changed.

He wouldn’t admit it, he had some semblance of dignity left, but he checked his clock about a hundred times each day in the hour before he got off. Purposely scheduled it so that all he had left was paper work and then forced himself to get the paper work done at the hospital so that he wouldn’t have to take it home.

He made his way through the roads of Oakdale relaxed and happy, hummed a long to the radio and fidgeted when he had to pause for red lights. It was embarrassing. Then again, it was just him in the car.

Some days Luke would meet him at the door, talking a mile a minute about his day or his family. Others he’d shove a wailing baby at Reid and then beg off to find his sanity.

The days Reid walks into a quiet house are almost a let down.

He found Luke on the Lazy Boy in the living room, eyes closed and hands carefully wrapped around a sleeping Riley. Reid stood in the doorway and inhaled for a moment.

Luke opened one eye and started a little at the sight of Reid. “How long have you been standing there?”

“Long enough to see your drool,” he retorted. He bent down beside the chair and placed a hand on Riley’s back. “Not the most effective way to give him a bath, but you’re the one with a freakish amount of siblings.”

Luke rolled his eyes. “Cute.”

It kind of weirded Reid out when he caught sight of the small sleepy smile that was on Riley’s face. He knew genetics, understood that they shared no DNA, but that smile was Luke Snyder in miniature form. (He was essentially doomed.)

“What?” Luke asked suspiciously, one hand going up to his hair. “If it’s green it’s probably peas. Check that one off of the food Rocky gets. I swear, I feel like I’m never eating peas again.”

Reid chuckled. “You won’t get a fight from me. Riley’s rules.”

“Then what’s with the look?” Luke shifted gingerly, Riley making a snuffling noise of disapproval but not waking up.

“Just looking,” Reid shrugged, and pushed himself up with one fluid move towards Luke’s lips. He hummed appreciatively at the way Luke’s lips opened and a moment later Luke’s tongue swiped at his lower lip. It was a lazy kiss, one they were both too tired to have lead anywhere but somehow that didn’t bother Reid in the least.

He pulled back and moved to stand. He slipped his hand under his son, who even at nine months felt lighter than most babies Reid had encountered.

“Reid,” Luke hissed, hands going towards taking the baby back. “It took me like a half hour to get him down, don’t wake him.”

Riley barely flinched, just nuzzled a little into Reid’s neck and let out a long sigh. Reid cocked an eyebrow. “You were saying?”

He got a trademarked glower in his direction and he bit back a laugh. The fear of waking Riley up gone, he walked over to the couch and sat down, grabbing the remote and settling in.

“Now go take a shower,” Reid said, casually as he could. “You smell like a bad batch of split pea soup.”

“Great.”

Luke stomped his way across the room and Reid’s hand reached out just in time to catch his arm. “Hey.”

“Wha?”

He yanked Luke down and stole another kiss. “If anyone can pull off Eau D’Smashed Peas, it’d be you.”

Luke looked like he was attempting annoyance but had a huge smile on his face. “Oh Reid, that’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever said to me.”

“I have hidden depths,” Reid smiled.
